Bio
Brian Fonseca is Vice Provost for Defense and National Security Research at Florida International University (FIU), Director of FIU's Jack D. Gordon Institute for Public Policy, and a Research Professor. He is the Founding Executive Director of Cybersecurity@FIU and teaches in FIU's Department of Politics and International Relations and Honors College. Fonseca is a Fellow with New America's Future Security program and a Visiting Professor at Argentina's National Defense University. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Florida Digital Infrastructure & Security Alliance and the Miami Dade County Military Museum.
Fonseca's research and analysis focus on U.S. national security and foreign policy, Latin American governance and security, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies. His work pays particular attention to Cuba and Venezuela, as well as the growing strategic influence and activities of China and Russia in Latin America and the Caribbean. Before assuming his current leadership roles at FIU, Fonseca served as Senior Research Manager for Socio-Cultural Analysis at U.S. Southern Command's Joint Intelligence Operations Center South.
A frequent commentator on international affairs, Fonseca's analysis has been featured in major national and international media. He has appeared on BBC News and CNN and has been cited by outlets including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, and USA Today. He also serves as an on-air political analyst for WSVN 7News in South Florida and has provided commentary to media outlets across Latin America, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East.
Fonseca has testified before the U.S. Congress and is the author, co-author, and editor of three books and numerous publications on national security, democracy, cybersecurity, and U.S.–Latin American relations. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science, an M.A. in International Business, and a B.A. in International Relations from FIU. From 1997 to 2004, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, supporting the training of foreign military forces in operational and peacetime environments.
