An Immersive, Enriching Experience

The Steven J. Green School of International & Public Affairs partners with the university’s Office of Study Abroad on a variety of impactful programs that offer students the chance to study in foreign countries spanning the globe. Study abroad is a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the language, history and culture of another land. Students report that it’s an enriching and memorable experience that provides new perspectives, knowledge and skills that last a lifetime.

  • Trancoso, Brazil: Immersion in Language, Heritage, and Sustainability

    FIU in Trancoso, Bahia, is a faculty-led program that immerses students in Luso-Afro-Brazilian cultures through an intersection of academic learning, cultural heritage, and environmental sustainability. The program features visits to the Atlantic Forest, Indigenous communities, beaches, and historical sites. Participants engage with Bahian cuisine, music, capoeira, water sports, and cultural events while deepening their Portuguese language skills. Students will also collaborate with local NGOs on community-driven sustainability initiatives and social projects, making this program a transformative experience.

  • Passport To Italy - The Marvels of Sicily

    This Summer A course introduces students to the rich culture of Sicily. Students will learn the basic rules of the Italian language and the island’s rich history and traditions.

  • Green School Semester in Italy

    Immerse yourself in the vibrant port city of Genova, Italy—a historic crossroads of people, trade, international politics—while developing your Italian language skills and exploring the social forces that drive nationalism, identity formation and social change in Italy. This program combines intensive language study with social science courses that examine ethnicity, globalization, and urban life. Engage with Genova’s rich cultural tapestry, from its medieval caruggi (alleyways) to its contemporary life, struggles and triumphs as a diverse, globalized city. Reside in modern apartments in the historic Genoa city center and take classes at the FIU Genoa Center, housed in a 1,000-year-old medieval convent. Four courses (12 credits) will be taught by faculty from the Green School and the University of Genoa, with two courses in each of the A and B terms.

  • Intensive Language and Culture in Kyoto

    The summer program provides a comprehensive introduction to Japanese language and culture. Program participants are immersed in short-term intensive language study along with cultural exchange and exploration.

  • Argentina: Society, Politics, and International Relations

    This four-week program fosters an interdisciplinary understanding of Latin American international relations by living and studying in Buenos Aires. Open to undergraduate and graduate students.

    This program offers the opportunity to live and study in Salamanca, a charming town known for its Renaissance and Baroque architecture and lively culture. The program includes field trips to Segovia and Ávila.

  • FIU in Seville & Granada: Spanish for Business

    FIU in Seville & Granada is a Spanish-language immersion and business-focused program that allows students to explore European entrepreneurship and innovation. The program is designed for students with intermediate Spanish proficiency and includes visits to industrial parks, meetings with CEOs, and tours of companies in Seville, Granada, and Málaga. Students will engage with sectors such as sustainability, health, aeronautics, and tourism.

  • From Plate to Identity: A Taste of Europe

    FIU's “A Taste of Europe” is a faculty-led program that immerses students in the rich intersections of food, culture, and identity across three of Europe's most vibrant gastronomic landscapes. Traveling through Porto (Portugal), Lyon (France), and Palermo (Italy), students will experience how culinary traditions reflect history, community, and regional diversity. Through site visits, tastings, cooking classes, and discussions with local experts, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how cuisine shapes cultural identity while developing critical perspectives on Europe's diverse food heritage. This three-week program combines academic learning with hands-on culinary experiences, making it a transformative cultural and educational journey.

    This monthlong program is for those wish to learn or improve their Italian, learn more about the culture, and experience Italian life. The Italian "dolce vita" will change your perspective and attitude.

  • Marvels of Northern Italy: A Journey to Genoa and Trento

    “Marvels of Northern Italy: A Journey to Genoa and Trento” is a study abroad program designed for undergraduate students eager to expand their academic and cultural horizons. The program offers an immersive experience in two distinct Italian cities: Genoa, a bustling coastal hub of art, history, and Mediterranean culture, and Trento, a picturesque alpine city renowned for innovation, sustainability, and its unique blend of Italian and Central European influences. Through a mix of coursework, site visits, and cultural activities, students gain new perspectives on global issues while exploring the rich traditions, landscapes, and communities of Northern Italy.

  • French Language and Culture in Angers

    This immersion program offers the opportunity to live and study in a beautiful French city whose architecture is a reminder of its medieval past. There are daily classes in French language and culture and weekend excursions.

  • The Magic of Christmas Markets in Italy

    This course introduces students to the traditional Christmas markets of South Tyrol and Bavaria, also known as the five-stars route. These markets reproduce a Christmas fairytale atmosphere and attract thousands of tourists every year.
