Biography
Astrid Arrarás was born and raised in Puerto Rico. She graduated from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez with B.A. in Political Science in 1984. After receiving her B.A, she earned a Ph D. in Political Science at Princeton University in 1998. From 1998 until 1999, she worked as a Lecturer in the Department of Politics at Princeton University. At Florida International University, she worked as an Assistant Professor (1999-2004), Director of Academic Programs in the Latin American Caribbean Center (2004-10), Lecturer (2004-10), Senior Lecturer (2011-18) University Lecturer (2019) and Teaching Professor (from 2019 until the present) in the Department of Politics and International Relations. She is also the Coordinator of Internship Programs in the Department of Politics and International Relations. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on a range of topics including Comparative Politics, Political Violence, International Relations of Latin America, Politics of South America, Politics of Central America, Politics of Latin America, and Democratization. At Florida International University, she was honored with the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2004. She has published several articles in academic journals and book chapters in edited volumes. Her research interests include Democratization, Political Violence, Political and Social Movements, and Human Rights.
