The Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC) at Florida International University proudly celebrates the publication of The Cambridge Handbook for the Anthropology of Race and Ethnicity, co-edited by LACC Affiliated Faculty member Dr. Jean Muteba Rahier and Dr. Jemima Pierre of the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. Published on April 22, 2026, as part of the prestigious Cambridge Handbooks in Anthropology series, the volume offers a comprehensive and critical examination of race, ethnicity, racism, and global inequality through the lens of contemporary anthropology. Bringing together diverse scholarly perspectives, the handbook explores the historical and contemporary realities of race and racism across multiple regions of the world while critically engaging with anthropology’s own role in shaping racialized understandings of human diversity.
One of the volume’s major contributions is its emphasis on moving beyond traditional US-centered analyses of race by examining racial formations and inequalities in Latin America, Asia, Africa, and other global contexts. The handbook addresses themes such as anti-Blackness, multiculturalism, migration, white privilege, national identity, and the transnational circulation of racial ideologies, offering readers a deeper understanding of how race continues to shape societies in the twenty-first century.
Dr. Rahier, Professor of Anthropology and African & African Diaspora Studies at FIU, is an internationally recognized scholar whose distinguished career includes extensive research, publications, editorial leadership, and public scholarship on race, ethnicity, Afro-descendant communities, and social justice in Latin America and the Caribbean. LACC congratulates Dr. Rahier on this significant academic achievement and celebrates his continued contributions to critical scholarship and interdisciplinary dialogue at FIU and beyond.
