Publication: Canan Balkır's book chapter on gender policy in Türkiye

Dr.  Canan Balkır , Adjunct Professor of Economics, has authored an chapter published in In S. Zwingel, B. N. Hernandez, & L. T. Torres (Eds.), Feminist responses to crises and dehumanization: Transnational scholar-activist perspectives (pp. 87-104). Routledge. The chapter analyzes how gender policy intersects with democratic backsliding in Türkiye and considers the European Union’s waning influence in supporting democracy in this official candidate state. It also foregrounds the resistance of women’s organizations to this erosion, noting their 2021 petition to the Council of Europe contesting Türkiye’s withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention.

Dr. Canan Balkır, Professor of Economics and former Jean Monnet Chair, has held posts as department chair, dean, and vice president at various universities in Türkiye and Cyprus. She has led many EU-funded projects. A Fulbright and British Council scholar, she has also been deeply engaged in human rights, democracy, and women’s advocacy.
