Bio

Erika Harlitz-Kern specializes in Viking Age, medieval, and early-modern Europe with focus on Scandinavia and Sweden. Dr. Harlitz-Kern has a PhD from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, and is the author of the monograph Urban Systems and State Formation in Scandinavia. The Rise and Fall of the Town of Lödöse, c. 1050–1646 (Gothenburg, 2010). In addition to publishing her research in peer-reviewed research journals such Scandinavian Journal of History, Revue d'histoire nordique, and International Journal of Maritime History, Harlitz-Kern also works as a public historian. She is a recurring contributor to The Week, and has published articles in The Daily Beast and The Washington Post, among others. She has been featured on Counterpoint with Amanda Vanstone on ABC Australia and The Story of God with Morgan Freeman on the NatGeo Channel.
