EU & Eurasian Certificate Programs

The European and Eurasian Studies Program at the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs offers two certificates in European and Eurasian Studies:

  • Undergraduate Certificate in EU & Eurasian Studies

    Undergraduate Certificate in EU & Eurasian Studies

    • The European & Eurasian Studies Certificate is open to all degree-seeking students.
    • It is an interdisciplinary program that draws on a broad range of courses from throughout FIU to complement a student’s own interests. - Approved study-abroad courses, including those offered by the Honors College, may be accepted for certificate credit.
    • The certificate program is only open to all degree-seeking students enrolled at FIU.
    • Since Spring 2001, 318 students obtained their Certificates in European and Eurasian Studies.

    Requirements - Undergraduate Certificate

    The program requires 15 credits hours (5 courses) from at least 3 departments, distributed as follows:

    Language Requirements (3 credits)

    • One course in a European language at the intermediate (2000) level or above.

    Breadth Requirement (12 credits)

    • Four courses at 3000-level or above, not all of which can be in either Social Science or in Humanities.
    • Courses must be from an approved list published in the class schedule each term, or else contain substantial European content and approved by the Director.
    • Such courses are offered by the Departments of:
      • Art and Art History
      • Economics
      • English
      • Environmental Studies
      • History
      • Humanities
      • International Relations
      • Modern Languages
      • Philosophy
      • Political Science
      • Religion

    Application - Undergraduate Certificate

    • The Certificate is open to students enrolled at FIU.
    • FIU students must register for the Certificate with the program director and/or associate director.

    Before any appointment with the program director and/or associate director, you must:

    • Download, fill out, sign and date the internal European and Eurasian Studies Certificate Application and give it back to the European and Eurasian studies program Associate director.
    • Fill out, sign and date the Change of Program Plan Form and give it back to the European and Eurasian studies program associate director to be signed and stamped.
    • Bring your unofficial transcript to the European and Eurasian studies program associate director before your appointment with the program director.

    In order for you to be registered in the data base, you need to meet with the European and Eurasian studies program associate director and bring back a copy of the three documents duly filled out, signed and dated:

    Remember that you will have to take the originals of these 3 documents with you when you have your appointment with the associate director.

    Once your "Office of the Registrar Certificate Program Application" is signed by the program director or associate director, you need to take it to OneStop and ask them to scan the application and date it, and to return it to the associate director - Office SIPA 513

  • Graduate Certificate in EU & Eurasian Program

    Graduate Certificate in EU & Eurasian Program

    • This multidisciplinary certificate brings together faculty expertise and student interest in European and Eurasian Studies.
    • This certificate will be open to our Master’s and Doctoral students.
    • This certificate program is open to degree seeking students only.
    • Certificate students will be asked to take a variety of courses with European content from a number of disciplines that reach across the humanities, social sciences and the arts.
    • This Graduate Certificate in European & Eurasian Studies is designed so that students can demonstrate substantive knowledge about specific aspects of European culture, history, politics, economics and society, as well as demonstrate language competency and gain a broader understanding of Europe, the EU and its relationship to other parts of the globe.
    • The program is ideal for students interested in a broader, multidisciplinary area studies perspective. At 15 credits (5 courses) this program provides both an overview of European history, culture, societies and politics and more nation-specific knowledge and training, as per the interests and goals of our students.

    Requirements - Graduate Certificate

    The program requires 15 credits hours (5 courses)
    from at least 2 academic disciplines (different course prefixes)

    This certificate program is open to degree seeking students only. The program is ideal for students interested in a broader, multidisciplinary area studies perspective. At 15 credits (5 courses) this program provides both an overview of European history, culture, societies and politics and more nation-specific knowledge and training, as per the interests and goals of our students.

    Baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution for higher education (or equivalent);

    GPA: 3.0 or higher average required for the last two years of undergraduate course of study.

    GRE: Not required

    TOEFL: Required for all foreign graduates (550 paper-based, 80 internet-based or 6.5 on IELTS exam)

    Prescribed Courses and Other Requirements:

    • Students must take five European-content classes in at least two academic disciplines (different course prefixes). Available courses will be listed on our website www.europe.fiu.edu each semester.
    • All students must earn a grade of “B” or better in each course. The below courses represent a partial list. Courses not included on the lists of approved courses each semester may count toward meeting the requirement of the certificate only with the permission of the certificate director. Since Graduate courses are offered in such variety, be sure to check.

    Application - Graduate Certificate

    • The Graduate Certificate is open to Master's and Doctoral students enrolled at FIU
    • This certificate program is open to degree seeking students only.
    • FIU students must register for the Graduate Certificate with the Program Director and Associate Director. Your application must be signed and approved by the Program Director.

    Before any appointment with the program director, you must:

    • Download the European Studies Graduate Certificate Application-Student File, click here, fill it out, sign it, and date it. The director will check with you the courses you will have to take. You will then give the form back to the European studies program Associate Director.
    • Fill out, sign and date the Office of the Registrar Graduate Certificate Program Application (for currently enrolled FIU graduate students only), click here; Then, the Director will approve it and sign it. You will give a copy to the European & Eurasian Studies Program Associate Director.
    • Bring your unofficial transcript to the European and Eurasian studies program Associate Director before your appointment with the program director.

    Once the Office of the Registrar Graduate Certificate Program Application Form has been completed, approved and signed by the Director of the certificate program, then, you will submit the application along with a non-refundable $30.00 Application Fee, made payable to "Florida International University", to the One Stop counter located in SASC 126.
