On September 25, 2014, the Václav Havel Initiative for Human Rights and Diplomacy hosted a book presentation and signing with Timothy Phillips, author of Beyond Conflict: 20 Years of Putting Experience to Work for Peace and co-founder of the organization Beyond Conflict, a widely respected conflict resolution and reconciliation initiative that has made important contributions to the consolidation of peace and democracy around the world. His book is dedicated to the memory of Václav Havel, Ervine Gómez and Leonel Gómez – three individuals who showed peaceful change was possible and shaped history by leaving behind a lasting legacy that resonates to this day.
In an era in which war and devastation dominate the headlines, Beyond Conflict is a timely and relevant reminder that peace is not an illusion, but can be a reality. For this event, the Havel Initiative also hosted Veton Surroi, former editor-in-chief of a Kosovo newspaper and Head of the Foreign Policy Association, and Donna Hicks, Associate at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University. The presentation was introduced by Martin Palous, Director of the Václav Havel Initiative and former Ambassador of the Czech Republic to the United States. The event was co-sponsored by the European Studies Program and the Miami-Florida European Union Center of Excellence.
