Treating Context Seriously in the Strategic Management of Public Services Organizations

On March 3, 2015, the Institute for Public Management and Community Service hosted this seminar to provide a discussion about why the discipline of strategic management may find enhanced applicability in contemporary public services. It discussed the applicability of a “schools of thought in strategic management approach” to public sector organizations. It made the case for bringing to the fore the analysis of contextual influences for an improved usage of strategic management in public services.

The presentation was made by Edoardo Ongaro, President of European Group of Public Administration for the past two years. He has served as the chair for the Permanent Study Group on Intergovernmental Relations and for the Permanent Study Group on EU Administration and Multi-Level Governance. He is a professor of international public services management at Northumbria University, Newcastle, UK. He has also held academic positions at SDA Bocconi School of Management and Bocconi University, where he still serves as a visiting professor of Policy and Administration. He has served in various academic and expert committees and has contributed to numerous international research projects.
