The annual conference of the American Society for Public Administration took place from March 6 to 10, 2015 in Chicago and students and faculty from FIU were very actively involved in it. Fifteen of FIU’s public administration doctoral students were among the 1,200+ participants in the conference, with almost all of them either presenting papers or chairing various conference panels. Several of the department’s faculty also presented papers at the conference. Allan Rosenbaum, Public Administration Department Professor, presided at the conference—which marked the conclusion of his year long term as President of the 8,000 member association. Florida Secretary of Commerce and longtime Miami-Dade County Administrator, Bill Johnson, received a National Public Service Award at the conference.
ASPA is unique among academic associations in that it includes a large number of practitioners of public administration, as well as scholars in the field. FIU Associate Provost, Meredith Newman, is also a former President of ASPA. FIU’s Public Administration Department, which is highly ranked nationally, is one of the few departments in the country which can claim two former Presidents of the main academic association in the field.
