In June 2015, the Spanish and Portuguese governments approved laws that offered citizenship to those descendants of the Sephardim who were expelled from Spain and Portugal in 1492 and 1497. Dr. Raanan Rein, the Vice-President of Tel Aviv University, will discuss this newly established right to return to Sefarad. The year 2016 marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and Spain and the event is in celebration of this remarkable and historical moment.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day commemorates the genocide committed by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. An estimated 6 million Jews, 1 million Roma, 250,000 mentally and physically disabled people, and 9,000 homosexual men were killed during the Holocaust. The United Nations designated January 27th as the annual date to mark this genocide. The largest Nazi death camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau, was liberated by Soviet troops on January 27, 1945.

Join the Initiative for Muslim World Studies for a lecture by Bella Tendler Krieger on "The Nuṣayrī-ʿAlawīs: New Sources, New Insights into Heterodox Islam." The Nuṣayrīs (or ʿAlawites of Syria) are a syncretistic Shiite sect founded in the tenth century. The Nuṣayrīs are some of the only survivors of the heterodox cults of early Islam, and their literature, secretly preserved for the last thousand years, allows unique insight into how these groups functioned and what they actually believed.

Memory ADN/Memoria DNA is an exploration on cultural memory and how it is passed down from one generation to the next. It is a voyage through the sayings, customs and stereotypes, at times filled with humor, at times nostalgic, that explores the idea of what is “Spanish” from the perspective of a particular group of Latino immigrants (namely Caribbean and coastal). It is a work of experimental flamenco that combines dance, theater and film and de-constructs the forms of flamenco music and dance.

Join the Global Jewish Studies Program for a presentation by Marisa Scheinfeld. She has been documenting the dramatic degradation of some of the most famous Borscht Belt hotels and colonies. She will present a slide lecture of her series - and new book, which contains 129 photographs, Borscht Belt ephemera and a re-photographic of “now”and “then” imagery composed by using found postcards and creating a mirror image of their present day depictions.
